Educational Plays and Workshops

We have been presenting educational plays and workshops for over 5 years now. Our work follows the national curriculum very closely and therefore has a valid educational value. Over the past 2 years, we regularly toured four pieces of theatre in education, each with an accompanying workshop.

Tales from around the World

(Previous Project)

These are stories and myths from the imagination; stories that can inspire literacy and aural expression as well as developing social awareness. The characters are brought to life with masks, puppets and a little bit of magic.

“To keep 120 children (and teachers) riveted for 40 minutes on a show that was both educational and engrossing requires a very special TIE company.” (Teacher, Twickenham Primary School, West Midlands)

The Romans

(Previous Project)

The Celts, Julius Caesar, Claudius, Boudiccia and a house-proud Roman all appear from a time machine as our storyteller descends into the misty Roman past. We look at what Britain was like before the Romans came, right through to what they left behind.

“An excellent performance which covered all the curriculum for Romans. The whole school enjoyed it so much they did not want it to end. Neither did I.” (Teacher, Moorside Primary School, Droylsden)

Our Environment

(Previous Project)

Integrating aspects of the geography and science National Curriculum with personal and social development, Our Environment tells the story of Mother Earth and her search to find her lost children in an ever more polluted world. We not only show why and how the world has become polluted but what we can do to improve our environment.

“Excellent performances, both artistically inspiring and educationally inventive”. (Nick Wyatt, Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council)

Rites of Passage

(Previous Project)

Rites of Passage was an educational performance and participatory art and drama workshop commissioned by Blackburn with Darwen Education Action Zone and developed by Talia in conjunction with Proper Job Theatre Company in 2000. The project toured to six schools within the borough and accessed over 1,300 pupils. The workshop focused on issues of change and the promotion of tolerant and understanding communities.

The school was also left with a picture that they had collaborated on which could then be displayed in the school as a reminder of Talia’s visit.

“Common themes crossed the boundaries of culture, time and space” (Teacher, Darwen Moorland School, Blackburn)

“The National Curriculum obsession with ICT, Science and Numeracy have deprived pupils of creative performance arts. This was a refreshing change and a welcome one”. (Year 7 Teacher, Our Lady & St John RC High School, Blackburn).

Queen Mel - Creative and Responsible Citizenship Project

(Previous Project)

In 1999, Talia Theatre developed Queen Mel, a project designed to reach children between the ages of 5 and 7 in the Education Action Zone of Blackburn and Darwen. The children watched a 30 minute metaphorical play followed by a drama and art workshop in which the children created a collage with the help of a professional artist.

Queen Mel told the story of a young girl who found herself left with responsibility over the land in which she lived after the sudden death of her father the King.

Throughout the day, the children learnt about caring for each other, working together and, perhaps most importantly, about how their actions can affect themselves and others.

“This was a worthwhile initiative, we would welcome any future projects....the experience of having a theatre company in school was superb.” (Year 6 Teacher)
